چکیده

C disease bears the highest burden among parasitic diseases in the Western Hemisphere and generates considerable health-related costs. Considered as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization, it is caused by the infection with the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi. Transmission is mainly vector-borne through the inoculation of infected reduviidae bugs feces, but it can also be acquired vertically, which remains the predominant route outside endemic areas. In Europe and other nonendemic countries, the number of imported cases is rapidly increasing due to the migration of large populations at risk. Whereas most reported cases concern adults at the chronic stage, congenital and pediatric cases are poorly identified and reported due to the frequent lack of systematic screening programs in countries at risk. Infected newborns and children bear risks of long-term and potentially life-threatening complications.

A family cluster of Chagas disease detected through selective screening of blood donors: A case report and brief review

Chagas disease (CD) is a protozoan infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted by triatomine insect vectors in parts of Latin America. In a nonendemic country, such as Canada, spread can still occur via vertical transmission, and infected blood or organ donations. The Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec have both implemented selective screening of blood donors for CD based o...

Chagas disease has overcome borders, and it is no longer restricted to endemic countries. Nowadays, it can be found in the Unites States, Cana...

High prevalence of congenital Trypanosoma cruzi infection and family clustering in Salta, Argentina.

OBJECTIVE Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease, is transmitted mainly by insect vectors, but congenital and transfusion-borne infections occasionally occur. The factors that are involved in transmission from mother to offspring are not well understood. The objective of this study was to study the presence of T cruzi infection in children who were born to infected mothers an...

Fatal Chagas Disease Among Solid-Organ Transplant Recipients in Colombia

Chagas disease continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality in endemic areas in Latin America. Although there have been some well documented successes in halting the transmission of Chagas disease through preventive interventions to decrease vector-borne and blood-transfusion cases, this parasitic infection continues to be transmitted through these routes in some areas as well through...
